Salt Hill Stream Restoration Project

Location: 29 Woodland Ave, Slough SL1 3BX, UK

This project aims to restore and realign the Salt Hill Stream as it flows through Godolphin Recreation Ground and Baylis Park in Slough.

Over the years, this section of the stream has been straightened and constrained, pushed to the sides of the park – resulting in an increased likelihood of local flash flooding and significant flood risk downstream – particularly in Salt Hill Park, the recreation grounds, and nearby residential areas such as Newbery Way.

Nestled within the urban landscape of Slough, the restoration aims to reconnect the stream to its natural floodplain, by re-me

andering the stream and creating small wetland areas. We are not altering the majority of the park spaces, so that these can remain as recreational areas, already in good use by  local residents.

The work in Godolphin is designed to deliver a range of environmental, social, and economic benefits, including:

  • Reduced flood damage and disruption
  • Increased floodwater storage and improved flood resilience for the Salt Hill Stream and Chalvey Ditches catchments.
  • Enhanced water quality, biodiversity, and habitat creation.
  • Improved public green space for recreational use.
  • Opportunities for learning and engagement in the community, around restoration and flood awareness.
  • Carbon reduction, improved ecosystem services, and enhanced public health and wellbeing.

By transforming  Salt Hill Stream into a resilient, multi-functional landscape, this project will act as a flagship example of nature-based solutions improving biodiversity and community wellbeing – benefitting all those who use and live near the park.
