So many ways to get involved

We’ve got a brilliant programme of events this year, from helping to uncover Slough’s Hidden Nature to volunteering your time for our Citizen Science Programme.

We need as many residents as possible to learn about the effects of climate change and the many ways in which we can work with nature and water to help make a difference in our neighbourhood.

Take a look at the options below – there will be something for everyone- and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Green Your Streets: Drop-in Workshops

Green Your Streets is a free community event series designed to help residents and community groups take practical action to make streets greener, healthier, and more resilient to climate change.

During these drop-in sessions, we’ll explore how small, local interventions — from planting and rain gardens to rethinking street design — can make a big difference.

Whether you’re already involved in local greening projects or just starting to explore what’s possible where you live, these events will give you inspiration, knowledge, and practical next steps.

Neighbourhood Resilience FORUM

Saturday 28th February, 11:00am – 2:00pm
A friendly community event about the future of Chalvey area.

Over the coming months, the Project Sponge team will be working in the area to improve flood resilience and green space – making it better for wildlife and the community.

But its future depends on you.

Join us at the Neighbourhood Resilience Forum and help shape what this special place should look like.

Water Rangers - Water Quality Session of the Salt Hill Stream

Come and help us explore the health of Salt Hill Steam, as part pf Citizen’s Science River Monitoring & Research initiative.

Using easy-to-use Water Rangers test kits, we’ll check the water quality of our local stream and then upload the results to a global citizen science database.

No experience needed – just bring your curiosity and be ready to get hands-on by the water.

Our Green Your Streets drop-in workshop at Chalvey Community Centre this Saturday wrapped up this round of community sessions, and what a way to finish. 🙌

It was fantastic to meet some new faces, hear fresh perspectives, and continue the conversations that have been building across our ...project areas. Every story shared and every idea mapped helps us better understand where small, practical green changes can make a real difference.

That’s the beauty of this work. It grows through people. Through dialogue. Through local knowledge.

With our community drop-ins now complete, we’re moving into the next phase: connecting with businesses who have premises within our project areas. Surface water and flood resilience affect everyone - and local businesses have a key role to play in shaping solutions that work for the whole community.

Saturday’s Green Your Streets workshop reminded us why community matters 🌿

We had powerful conversations, practical ideas, and real momentum in the room.

Even better?

We had genuine local champions stepping forward, people who care deeply about their streets and are ...ready to be part of the solution. That’s where real change begins.

The site was perfectly chosen too. So much potential. You could almost see the future improvements taking shape as ideas were shared.

We’re excited to keep the momentum going, with plans to continue discussions with Councillor Manku and the Gurdwara, including a walkover to explore what’s possible on the ground.

Now it’s your turn.

As a Learning Officer at the WWT London Wetland Centre London Wetland Centre, Dan works with wetlands in both urban and rural places, spaces designed to support migratory waterfowl and people.

But wetlands don’t just support wildlife.
They’re powerful natural allies in the fight ...against flooding.

By slowing water down, storing it, and releasing it safely, wetlands help protect communities while creating richer, healthier places for nature to thrive.

This is why wetlands sit at the heart of Project Sponge, and why learning, connection, and community matter just as much as the landscape itself.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? 𝗣𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀.

These shallow, calm waters provide safe spaces for frogs, insects, and birds to breed and feed. ...

In restored areas like Salt Hill Stream and across the wider Project Sponge catchment, new ponds quickly become busy wildlife hubs. Look closely and you might spot dragonflies darting through the air, water boatmen skating across the surface, or ducks dabbling along the edges.

And with future work planned in areas like Godolphin Playing Fields, we’re continuing to create spaces where both nature and communities can thrive.

The more ponds and wetlands we create and care for in Slough, the more life they support. Every healthy wetland strengthens biodiversity and helps manage surface water at the same time.

Living near a river, stream or ditch? 🌊

Here’s what not to do and why it matters.

Small actions can cause big problems downstream. Please avoid:

❌ Dumping garden waste into ditches
❌ Blocking culverts or access points
❌ Paving over green space ...without proper drainage
❌ Building too close to watercourse banks

These actions can increase local flood risk, reduce wildlife habitat, and put your neighbours at risk.

Let’s protect our blue and green spaces together 💚

Project Sponge is all about working with communities.

We’re supporting neighbourhoods across Slough to better manage flooding, respond to climate change, and care for the places people use every day.

From co-creating the Water Lives Here mural, to celebrating nature at the Water... & Nature Festival, to hosting forums and workshops, everything we do starts with local voices and local knowledge.

With Project Sponge running until 2027, we’re especially keen to connect with schools and community groups who want to host a neighbourhood resilience forum or get involved in shaping greener, more welcoming public spaces.
