🌱💧 Our rain gardens in Slough are taking shape!

As we continue work on our new rain gardens at the Pakistan Welfare Association, we were delighted to welcome volunteers from the Sharifa Ibrahim Foundation and Cardo Group, whose support has been invaluable in helping us plant and ...establish these new community green spaces. 💚

Rain gardens help reduce the risk of flooding by capturing and absorbing rainfall, while also supporting biodiversity and creating attractive spaces for local communities to enjoy!

💧🌧️ Recently, we returned to a local school in Slough to continue exploring Ravi the Raindrop’s journey!

Building on what we learned last time, we followed Ravi’s journey from the sky all the way to a SuDS planter and rain garden, discovering how these nature-based solutions ...help manage rainwater in a sustainable way.

Our fantastic Eco Warriors learned how rainwater can be captured, filtered and slowed down before reaching drains, helping to create greener spaces and support local wildlife. 🌿🐝

It was great to see so much enthusiasm and curiosity as the pupils explored how small changes can make a big difference to our environment! 💚

🌍♻️ This Plastic Free July, small swaps can make a big difference.

Reducing plastic doesn't have to mean changing everything at once. Taking it room by room is a great place to start. Whether it's choosing a refillable deodorant, storing leftovers in reusable containers ...instead of cling film, or carrying a reusable water bottle, every swap adds up. 💚

Plastic pollution doesn't just harm wildlife and pollute our rivers. It can also contribute to flooding. When plastic waste finds its way into drains, streams and culverts, it can restrict the flow of water and cause water levels to rise during heavy rainfall. 💧

Small changes today can help protect our environment for the future!

The Project Sponge team recently helped plant one of six new SuDS Pods installed at Cippenham Community Centre's Pre-School Stars Nursery. 📍

Located in the nursery play area, this SuDS Pod will help capture and slow down rainwater, reducing pressure on drains and helping to manage ...surface water more naturally.

SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) are a simple but effective way to help reduce flood risk while creating greener, more attractive spaces for people and wildlife. 🌱

It was fantastic to support the nursery and see a nature-based solution become part of the children's outdoor learning environment! 💚

Ever wondered what wetlands actually are? 💧🤔

They're nature's in-between spaces, where land meets water. From streams and ponds to marshes, wetlands act like giant natural sponges, soaking up excess rainwater and slowing it down before it can cause flooding.

Did ...you know Slough has its very own wetland? The Salt Hill Stream, running through through the centre of Slough's many park such as Salt Hill Park, Baylis Park and Godolphin Recreation Ground! 🌿These areas provide valuable habitats for wildlife while helping to manage water naturally.

Wetlands do far more than support nature. They can also play an important role in reducing flood risk, improving water quality and creating healthier, greener spaces for everyone to enjoy. 🌧️💚

📢 Recently, we met with Slough MP Tan Dhesi to discuss flooding in Slough and the work being done through Project Sponge.

We shared some of the challenges that flooding can bring to local communities, as well as the progress being made to help manage surface water in a more sustainable ...way.

From installing rain gardens and SuDS planters to working with schools and local residents, Project Sponge is helping to create greener spaces that can capture rainfall, support wildlife and build resilience to future flooding. 🌿💧

It was a great opportunity to showcase the positive impact of nature-based solutions and discuss how projects like these can benefit communities across Slough.
