Here for stronger, healthier communities.

Climate change is increasing the likelihood of flooding, drought and heat stress.
Local stories will help us plan the right action
The community is at the centre of all we do

About our project

Climate change is increasing the likelihood of flooding, drought and heat stress, putting us at risk, and leaving no place for nature to thrive. This is a global crisis, but we know that climate change is already happening in Slough. The best action we can take locally is to work out what solutions are best for us, in the area we live.

This project is funded by Defra as part of the £200m Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes which is managed by the Environment Agency. The programmes will drive innovation in flood and coastal resilience and adaptation to a changing climate.

Plan for change

Project Sponge is working with the local community to plan for climate change and create better places for nature and people.

This means bringing together residents, within the Chalvey Ditches and Salt Hill Stream areas, to act as one, for a stronger and more sustainable response to the climate crisis.

It’s an opportunity for those within the area to raise their views, concerns and suggestions for change. To work shoulder to shoulder with others, sharing their knowledge, their experiences and their desire to create a neighbourhood that has the ability to bounce back from flooding and the wider effects of climate change.

You can join one of our Climate Action Cafes, and Flood Action Groups, are part of the plan to create Future Proof Neighbourhoods.

In your community

We’ve assembled communities, conservation charities and flood specialists to understand what the issues are, what specific areas of concern we can address, and how we can work together to tackle these – as a team.

The success of this project will not only be measured by flood resilience and an increase in wildlife – but by an even greater sense of community involvement, pride in the area, and a positive impact on the general well-being of us all.

You can meet other members of your community, and share your views at one of our upcoming events.

Reducing the impact

We want to help people understand the risk of flooding in their area. Working with those who have experienced flood, means we can support and help people recover.

It also means that we listen to our community so that they can take control and reduce the impact on their lives through working with others.

If you’ve been flooded, you can join one of our Flood Action Groups for help and support or join our wider community meetings.

You can find out more about flood action groups here or contact NFF 01299 40305.

Our project area

Climate change is predicted to increase rainfall intensity in the future by up to 40%. This will increase the frequency and intensity of surface water flooding, especially in impermeable urban areas like Slough and those currently susceptible to surface water flood risk.

We are active within the areas highlighted on the map.

These ‘catchment’ areas have been specifically chosen to build on our work that was started previously in the location and to try more practical, innovative approaches in a changing climate.

Goals and Aims of Project Sponge

Our project will deliver greater flood resilience and improved public wellbeing, through sustainable public spaces.

We are using a collective approach to flood management between all project partners and the community. This will ensure water management solutions are community-led.

We aim to improve understanding of flood risk and the further benefits water management brings.
